Being Clever vs Being Clear

Whenever we are communicating, whether that’s verbally or in written form, I’ve noticed that there might be times where it’s better to be clever vs clear.

Here’s an example with some help from 2 Chainz.

When to be clever: A catchy advertisement with 2 Chainz and Adam Scott (where 2 Chainz has to expense everything in his music video) that will get someone to remember the name of your app, Expensify.

When to be clear: *They remembered your app, and are downloading it!* Remind me of the value proposition again?

So maybe the guideline for when to be clever vs clear is:

Everyone is competing for attention, be clever to capture it.

Once you have someones attention, the world is complicated enough, don’t add to it.
